3 Reasons Why Car Insurance Is So Expensive in 2026
Car insurance rates continue to rise in 2026, but inflation isn’t the only reason. From expensive vehicle repairs to advanced technology, here are three reasons drivers are paying more for coverage.

Drivers across San Diego and throughout California are seeing significant rate increases in 2026. While inflation is a common culprit, these rising premiums reflect a complex mix of modern vehicle technology and the growing costs of keeping your car on the road.
Here are three reasons why auto insurance has risen so dramatically.
The Cost of a Vehicle
The average cost of a vehicle today is $49,000, a staggering $12,000 more than it was only five years ago. The cost of fully replacing a lost or stolen vehicle has risen significantly and outpaced the gradual premium increases carriers used to charge.
The Cost of Repair and Replacement
Insurance premiums are largely a reflection of the “risk” an insurer takes on. When vehicle repair costs go up, insurer payouts follow, which eventually leads to higher rates for policyholders. Because you can take your vehicle to any repair shop you want, it can also cost the carrier more money if you take it to the dealership. Today’s vehicles are vastly more expensive to repair than those from a decade ago. Modern cars are loaded with sensors, radars, and sophisticated electronic components in their bumpers, fenders, and doors. A minor “fender bender” that once cost a few hundred dollars to fix now requires expensive electronic recalibration and specialized parts, significantly driving up total claim costs.
The Windshield Factor: Technology Behind the Glass
Windshields are no longer just simple panes of safety glass. In modern vehicles, the windshield is a critical component of the car’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Because cameras and sensors for features like automatic emergency braking and lane-keep assist are often mounted directly to the windshield, replacing the glass isn’t enough.
When you replace a windshield, the entire system must be professionally recalibrated, which requires specialized labor and equipment. That significantly increases the bill for what used to be a standard repair. Repair costs range from $60-$150. Full replacements cost anywhere from $250-$ 1,500. Tesla and high-end vehicles can cost around $3,000 to replace. If there is a chip in the driver’s line of sight, you must replace the whole windshield!
