History
What began as a military base named Camp Kearny in 1917, Kearny Mesa eventually evolved into an aerospace hub that housed the small airport Montgomery Field and companies like General Dynamics.
The 1950s and 1960s saw an industrial boom in Kearny Mesa, followed by a commercial and retail expansion in the 1970s and 1980s. By the 1990s, the Pan-Asian influence began to make its mark in Kearny Mesa, primarily on Convoy Street.
Today
The Convoy District today is one of the hottest eating meccas in San Diego, with people traveling near and far to nosh on traditional and nouveau Asian dishes. Luxury apartment complexes have set their foothold in Kearny Mesa, blending more of the residential with the commercial.
