Fast Times Wide

Hey Neighbor!

Tomorrow marks 25 years since 9/11. While we may be far removed, both literally and figuratively, from that tragedy on the East Coast, it still affected us all in some way, shape, or form. I want to take a moment to honor those who lost their lives that day, especially Cindy Deuel, whom I went to high school with in Pennsylvania. For those of us who were alive at the time, it’s a moment we will never forget. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

So think about those people while you’re lucky to be aliveβ€”even in this sweltering heat that feels more like Florida than San Diego.

Let’s dig into this week’s news.

Local Spotlight

You’re getting a two-fer on the Local Spotlight stories today. I recently covered the Clairemont Pool’s extended closure, but yesterday I interviewed a city representative to provide additional insight and answer questions from the community. Read them in the story below.

Next, this Saturday kicks off a long-standing tradition in Clairemont: Clairemont Family Day. This beloved event takes place at South Clairemont Park every year and includes wholesome fun for all ages. Find out all about this year’s lineup in the story below so you can go prepared.

Open for Business and Coming Soon

Nothing Bundt Cakes in Clairemont officially opened a couple of weeks ago at 5575 Balboa Avenue in the Balboa-Mesa Shopping Center. This popular national chain offers full-size and mini-Bundt cakes in a wide variety of flavors.

Oi Shiba opened last week at 4428 Convoy Street #110 in the heart of the Convoy District. The highly-rated Japanese inari and ramen restaurant was previously located in Pacific Beach.

National superfood and fruit bowl chain Everbowl is aiming to open in Kearny Mesa. The county’s Department of Environmental Health and Quality is currently reviewing their application. If approved, they will open at 7612 Linda Vista Road, Suite 133, likely not until next year.

Two Killed in Crash at Montgomery-Gibbs Airport

A fiery airplane crash killed two on Monday at Montgomery-Gibbs Airport in Kearny Mesa. The Cessna plane crashed shortly after takeoff and began leaking fuel on the runway before catching on fire. The victims’ names have not been released, and the NTSB is investigating the cause.

Last Week’s Water Settlement Link

The link I posted last week to check on a settlement from the City of San Diego regarding water fees took you to an “under construction” section of a site that is still out of service. I’ve called and emailed to see if/when the site will be back up, but haven’t heard back. However, I did further research and found there isn’t an actual claim form to fill out. The website link was so you could check if you qualify for the refund. If you qualify, you’ll automatically receive payment, with an average payout of $62 expected later this year.
