Hey Neighbor!
Last week, a resounding 82% of you said you are excited about Nutmeg Cafe opening in Bay Park and plan to visit. This week, someone pointed out that their ‘Coming Soon’ sign was no longer on the building.
I reached out to their owner to ask if plans fell through. Nope, it was simply the wind that ripped the sign off the building. The projected opening date is early this fall (and I’ll try to work out a special deal for subscribers).
🍽️ Before we jump into the news, one quick question that I asked a couple of months ago (but we’ve doubled in size since then). Dinner with five strangers and yourself is taking the country by storm. You take a short quiz to match you with five others for dinner at a location revealed the morning of the dinner. Start as strangers. Leave as friends. Would this appeal to you? (If you want a sneak peek into what these dinners are all about, check out a short clip from our friend at Marin Buzz).

The Local Spotlight typically features one local story, but today you’re getting a twofer.
District 7 San Diego City Council Member Raul Campillo spoke to his constituents at a town hall in Linda Vista on Tuesday evening. He addressed San Diego’s ever-increasing parking and trash fees and also fielded public questions about fire safety, e-bikes, and other measures. At times tense, with residents sharing their frustrations, Campillo positioned himself as a representative who fights for his community.

🍻 San Diego Pub Reigns Supreme as Best Beer Bar in America
O’Brien’s Pub, in the heart of the Convoy District, won USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards for the best beer bar in the country. This is the third year in a row that O’Brien’s has won the honor. Votes were tallied in an online poll, and O’Brien’s fans turned out en masse. Opened in 1994, the pub is known for its craft beers, including those brewed by its co-owner, Tom Nickel.
📱Cell Phone Tower Update
The original date to discuss the proposed cell phone tower at Gershwin Park in Clairemont has been pushed from March to April. The Clairemont Community Planning Group’s Project Review Subcommittee, which will make a recommendation to the entire CCPG, will meet to discuss the topic on April 8. The final decision will be discussed at the regular CCPG meeting on April 21. Both meetings are open to the public and will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm at the Cathy Hopper Friendship Center on 4425 Bannock Avenue.
🗳️ It’s Community Election Season
Community Planning Groups across the City are holding elections for members this month. CPGs are volunteer-led groups that review and provide recommendations to the City regarding local projects and issues.
- March 17: Clairemont CPG elections will take place at 4421 Bannock Avenue, Room 2, from 9 am-5:30 pm
- March 19: Serra Mesa PG elections will take place at the Serra Mesa-Kearny Mesa Library
- March 23: Linda Vista PG elections will take place during their regular 6:15 pm meeting at the Kearny Mesa Recreation Center
🙋🏽♂️Last Chance for Candidate Questions
A couple of months ago, I asked you what questions you’d like District 2 and District 6 candidates to answer. Both seats will be open for the June mid-term elections. Since many of you are new to the newsletter, you haven’t had a chance to include your questions. You can add your question(s) to this form, and they will be completely anonymous (even to me).
I’ll begin interviewing candidates next week. So far, they include Richard Bailey, Nicole Crosby, Mandy Havlik, and Josh Coyne, but I’ll be adding more.
To make things fair, they will all receive the exact same questions, and none of the interviews will be published until all are complete.
Openings
San Diego Halal Meat
There’s a banner up for San Diego Halal Meat at Liberty Park Plaza, 4330 Genesee Avenue. They have a location in El Cajon. It is not known when the new location will open.
85C Bakery Replacements
Food blogger mmm-yoso (great stuff, by the way) posted on Instagram on Wednesday that he saw new signage at the former 85C Bakery location at 5575 Balboa Avenue. It looks like the space will be divided into two businesses–Isaki Japanese Restaurant and Nothing Bundt Cakes.
mmm-yoso’s eagle eyes also captured a few more business openings and closings in the Convoy District:
- Urban Matcha will replace Sizzling House on 4698 Convoy Street, Ste. 107
- L.A. Hot Duck will open in the former Juewei space at 4690 Convoy Street, Ste. 103

🐾 Meet Sor Juana
This quirky terrier mix was rescued from a home with 40 dogs. Now she’s ready for her forever home, where she can be the star of the show. Shy at first, Sor is quick to warm up and give you lots of love. She’s ready for you at the San Diego Humane Society.

The Clairemont Town Council and the League of Women Voters will hold a candidate forum tonight so residents can learn more about the people running for District 2, which covers Clairemont and Bay Park. The candidates who accepted the invitation to the forum include: Richard Bailey, Nicole Crosby, Mike Rickey, Josh Coyne, Mandy Havlik, Jacob Mitchell, Paul Suppa, Eric Tims, and Dan Smiechowski
