Hey Neighbors!
School is officially back in session for public school kids, and even though that marks the unofficial end of summer, we still have a few weeks to go before the season officially comes to a close.
But just because summer is ending, that doesn’t mean the news stops. Here’s what’s in Fast Times this week:
- The Complete Brewery Guide for Clairemont, Kearny Mesa, Bay Park, and Bay Ho
- Clairemont Town Council Update
- How Marston is faring with the new bike lanes during pick-up and drop-offs
Let me know your thoughts!

BREWS CRUISE
Did you know the first brewery in San Diego opened in 1868? Since then, we’ve become the mecca of craft breweries, and our slice of the neighborhood is home to some of the best.
Kearny Mesa tops the list with the most breweries in our neighborhood, but Bay Park, Bay Ho, and the heart of Clairemont are also home to breweries.
Read our latest blog post that covers all the neighborhood breweries, and then decide which one—or ones—you’ll hit up this weekend. P.S. If you haven’t checked out The Gärten in Bay Park/Morena District, visit Deft Brewing for the beer, but stick around for the live music every weekend.

COMMUNITY & CIVIL NEWS
Clairemont Town Council Meeting
The CTC meeting took place on August 7, where various local topics were discussed, including:
- Pure Water Project: Construction around Clairemont continues, which includes the repaving of roads. If you’re interested in receiving construction updates on this project, you can get them sent to you by joining this list.
- The CTC and Pacific Beach Town Council are collaborating to support PAESAN (Police and Emergency Services Appreciation Night), a community-wide celebration of 400 first responders, neighbors, and elected officials. This will take place on September 24, from 4 pm to 6 pm at DeAnza Cove Park.
- There was an update on the City Council’s vote to amend the current ADU plan to limit the number of ADUs built on each lot. The mayor is set to sign the new restrictions into law later this month. He is required by law to wait 30 days after the vote was cast (which was in July) before he can sign the amendment into law. During this grace period, any prior approved ADU plans are grandfathered in under the old laws.
- Of note, Carrie Munson, who is a Clairemont resident, a Councilmember Jennifer Campbell staffer, and CTC Vice President, presented slides from the city’s documentation, pointing out the exorbitant number of ADUs in zone RS-1-7 (Clairemont) in comparison to the rest of the city’s zones. The chart below indicates the number of ADUs in all the RS zones in San Diego. You can access Carrie’s full slide deck from the meeting here.

Bike Lanes & School Drop-Offs: How’s It Working?
We are one week into the new school year, and there was much anticipation around the issue of how the new bike lanes would affect the pick-ups and drop-offs in front of Marston Middle School on Clairemont Drive.

Unfortunately, the outcome for parents and school officials has not been positive.
A comment from one parent whose daughter attends Marston: “It’s day 3 today, and drop off this morning was ridiculous.”
Principal Jonathan Gollias noted the following:
- “Parents are parking on southbound Clairemont Drive, and their children are running across Clairemont Drive to come to school.”
- “Vehicles struggle entering and exiting the ‘fixed length’ floating parking spots. This has resulted in honking, yelling, stopping traffic, etc.”
- “Students are arriving to school late as a result of the congestion.”
- “I was 100 percent surprised by the new striping in July. I’ve been the principal here since 2015. Zero communication about this [from the city].”
Principal Gollias has asked the city to come to Marston to observe the situation, but he says they have only been willing to meet online and have proposed no solutions. Principal Gollias is planning to host a parent/community event at Marston in the near future, where he will invite the city representatives in the hopes that they will listen to the community’s concerns.
There will be a more in-depth story on this topic in the near future.
Clairemont Community Plan Update
Officials from the city have not yet responded to my requests for additional information and clarification regarding their presentation at the Clairemont Community Plan meeting last week. Once they’ve responded, I’ll provide an in-depth overview of the proposed changes.

REAL ESTATE RUNDOWN
One of the large ADU projects recently hit the market for a whopping $5.25 million. The project includes a three-bedroom, two-bath home in front, with 11 one-bedroom units behind it. The property is located at 4674-4678 Firestone Ave. and can be seen here.
