Hey Neighbors!
I can’t help but hear Elton John’s “Rocket Man” every time I learn about the next SpaceX blast off. It’s happening again this Saturday between 7:05 and 11:05 pm, and we tend to get a great view of it in the neighborhood, so keep your eyes peeled.
And since you didn’t ask for it, the origin of the term “keeping your eyes peeled” dates back to the 1820s. Sir Robert Peel established the first organized British police force, and his officers were called peelers. They were told to keep their eyes peeled for crime.
Other news of the week:
- Meet your neighbor–winner of Cupcake Wars
- Neighbors think trash fees are garbage
- Local business openings and closings

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT
Clairemont’s Cupcake Queen Rises Again

Meet your Clairemont neighbor and small business owner, Mary Sarain. She’s a baker extraordinaire who dominated and won Food Network’s Cupcake Wars, and then opened a very successful cupcake shop in Pacific Beach.
Like many small business owners, she’s experienced the highs and lows that come with owning your own business, but through it all, she has maintained a loyal following because, well, her cupcakes and other baked creations are just that good.
Mary creates confectionery works of art that will dazzle your taste buds as much as your eyeballs.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Closed
- China Wok at 4310 Genesee Ave. has closed. No word on what’s coming into the space just yet.
- This is our neighbor to the north, but worth mentioning since it’s been a staple in the community for 40 years. Round Table Pizza on Governor Drive in University City has officially served its last pie.
Opening
The Peruvian Spot restaurant opened in Linda Vista earlier this year and has already earned accolades from San Diego Magazine. Clairemont, Linda Vista, and Kearny Mesa are hotspots for international culinary delights, and now we have more Peruvian fare to add to our list. Even better–The Peruvian Spot plans to unveil a new restaurant focused specifically on pollo la brasa. This traditional Peruvian chicken dish grills rotisserie chicken over charcoal for a unique flavor. Location or opening date has not yet been announced.
25-Year Celebration
This year marks the 25th year of Upward Bound, USD’s program for first-generation American students of Kearny and Hoover High Schools. The program helps economically disadvantaged students with eligibility in their pursuit of higher education.
Garbage In, Garbage Out
The recent trash collection fee being imposed by the City of San Diego has many local residents steaming mad. These fees, up to $523, which will be added to your property tax bill in October, will depend on the size of trash collection bins you select.
Between July 15 and September 30, property owners will get access to the city’s portal to select their trash bins. To calculate your fees, you can use this trash service fee calculator.
August Fore-th Changes at Tecolote Golf Course
Starting this Monday, Tecolote Golf Course will be limited to nine holes while the City of San Diego repairs and replaces sewer lines. Work will continue until late September. After that, the course will temporarily close until the spring of next year. Sounds like a triple bogey for Clairemont golfers.

PETS OF THE WEEK
The dogs have been getting all the love lately, so this week, let’s give it up for some purr-fect kittens.
Truffle and Chip are bonded siblings who hail from Tijuana. They’ve been rescued from the streets by Cuddly Claws Rescue, an all-volunteer rescue and foster organization based in Linda Vista. Ready to give them their forever home? Contact Deana at cuddlyclawsrescue@gmail.com.
