Hey Neighbor!
This week, you’re getting a little history lesson. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in the present and what lies ahead that we forget to pay homage to the distant past.
As someone who went to college in the south and saw markers and plaques pointing out historic sites all over the campus and city, I miss that we don’t see much of that in San Diego.
So, instead of a plaque telling you about our history, I give you a story instead. I hope you enjoy it.

Kearny Mesa, once known as the Linda Vista mesa, was a dry, desolate area north of San Diego. Known more for dust than ramen, it became one of the nation’s largest World War I training grounds, solidifying itself as a town steeped in military history.
The kicker? Camp Kearny was built from the dirt into a fully functional city with more than 1,200 buildings, electricity, roads, sewage, and running water in only 90 days.

Clairemont Chieftains Replacement Mascot on the Horizon
On January 20, Clairemont High School will announce its new mascot. Charlie the Chieftain has been deemed unlawful to use as a mascot following the passage of the Racial Mascots Bill in 2024.
The final name selections include: Aviators, Seahawks, Captains, and Trailblazers.
Safe Parking Program Gets a Makeover

The Rose Canyon Safe Parking lot in Bay Ho offers its residents a new community space intended to add more comfort and connection. Run by Jewish Family Services, the Safe Parking lot provides City-provided camper trailers to displaced families. Now, these families will also have a shared space where kids can play, do homework, and residents can share meals.
San Diego Magazine Names Three Men with Community Ties to its “50 to Watch” List
Each year, San Diego Magazine celebrates San Diegans who are making an impact on the city. This year, several businessmen in Linda Vista, Serra Mesa, and Kearny Mesa are recognized.
- Kevin Hwang’s father built Zion Market, San Diego’s first Korean grocery store, in 1979. Kevin is taking his father’s dream and making it even bigger. Kevin, who has relocated the flagship Zion location to the former Kmart location in Kearny Mesa, is building out a food mecca. Zion will be the foundation for a 25,000-square-foot rooftop deck, complete with a speakeasy and food stalls.
- A significant merger between Rady Children’s Hospital in Serra Mesa and Children’s Hospital of Orange County put Rady Children’s CEO Patrick Frias front and center of a large undertaking. Frias will be the sole CEO of the system, making him a powerhouse in children’s healthcare.
- The University of San Diego’s engineering program is one of the nation’s top-rated. Much of the acclaim is due to its dean, Chell Roberts, PhD. Roberts is helping roll out a $75 million Shiley STEM Initiative that will encourage students to make impactful discoveries through experimental research.
Clairemont Family Loses Home in Fire
An electrical issue is believed to have started a fire that set a Clairemont home ablaze, displacing a family of five. They had lived in the home on Mable Street for 17 years.

Meet Keith Richards
The dog is looking a lot better than the rock star he shares a name with, just sayin’. Keith is an almost-two-year-old Belgian Malinois. These pups are highly intelligent and thrive on mental and physical stimulation. If you can keep up with his active personality, go meet Keith at the San Diego Humane Society and bring him home.
