All right, Clairemonters–or Clairemonsters–whichever you prefer. Here’s the lowdown on what’s happening in our neighborhood faster than you can get through Balboa/Genesee at rush hour.
From filling potholes to baking bread with beer, and a sprinkle of history in between, there’s news to delight and incite.
Hope you enjoy this week’s read. You’re always welcome to respond to this email and let me know what you think.

COMMUNITY NEWS
ADUs
On June 17, the City Council voted 5-4 to limit the number of ADUs (additional dwelling units) that can be built on a lot based on its size. The new restrictions are:
- Four ADUs for lots of 8,000 square feet or less
- Five ADUs for lots between 8,001 and 10,000 square feet
- Lots larger than 10,0001 square feet are permitted six ADUs
Did you know 92117 and 92111 have had 573 ADU permits approved since 2020? More ADUs were built in San Diego than single-family homes in 2023.
Street Paving
At the latest Clairemont Town Council meeting on June 5, we got an update on our streets. No surprise to Clairemont residents–our streets rank among the worst in the city.
In 2023, the City of San Diego conducted an assessment of street conditions. The last survey prior to this was in 2016. The recent assessment showed an eight point drop to 61 in our PCI (Pavement Condition Index) score. 100 is the highest score. While San Diego averages a PCI of 61, Clairemont’s City Council District, District 2, scores a 57.
The state of a street’s disrepair will determine whether it will get a quicker fix (slurry seal) or a full overhaul (asphalt overlay). And since funding is an ongoing issue, you may notice that streets in better shape are getting slurry seals while those in worse shape are seemingly overlooked. This is due to budget constraints since overlays are significantly more expensive, but the city says it’s continuing to work on improving our streets.

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT
This week’s local spotlight includes a person and a pet.
Do You Know This Woman?

Most of you probably don’t recognize this woman, but she’s part of the reason you’re living in this neighborhood. Claire Tavares was the inspiration behind Clairemont. Her husband, Carlos, was one of the community’s developers and named it after her.
You also have Claire to thank for the many cul-de-sacs of Clairemont, since they were her idea. Read more of her story and the story of Clairemont here.
Pet of the Week
Okay, so I’m cheating a bit here and showcasing my own dog, Ruthie (who is moping by my feet as I write this because she wants to play). Ruthie is a successful foster fail. She’s about 3.5 years old, could take 9000 walks a day, adores kids, and is obsessed with lizards. Do you have a pet you’d like the neighborhood to know about? Respond to this email and let me know.
