Secret Stairs and ADUs…again

Hey Neighbors!

ADUs are back in the news, and if that stresses you out, don’t worry – I’ve got a great canyon trail you can explore later to reconnect with nature and release your tensions. And if that doesn’t work, head to Quantum Brewing for a comedy show and a cold one.

By the way, if you have friends in the neighborhood, share this newsletter with them and tell them to subscribe!

Let me know your thoughts!

COMMUNITY NEWS

AD-Ewww? City Council Officially Adopts New Reforms

ADU In Backyard

Councilmembers voted last month to cap the number of ADUs (Additional Dwelling Units) based on lot size, in addition to other reforms. On Tuesday, the San Diego City Council finalized these restrictions. The package is now headed to Todd Gloria for signature, and the restrictions will be implemented within the next 30 days.

Here are some quick facts you might want to know:

  • ADUs that have already been approved will be exempt from these restrictions.
  • Homeowners will now be able to sell ADUs as separate units per Assembly Bill 1033. You can dig into the full bill here.
  • There must be one off-street parking space for each ADU.
  • There will be tightened restrictions for building on lots within high fire hazard zones.
  • Walks from ADUs to a public transit stop must include a sidewalk.

Additional Patrol

Two additional motorcycle police officers have been assigned to the area for traffic enforcement, so if you like to put the pedal to the metal, do so at your own risk. Speeding just a few miles over the limit can cost you nearly $250 if you’re caught and ticketed. Keep it under control, Jimmie Johnson (shoutout to the NASCAR El Cajon native).

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT

The Secret(ish) Stairs of Marian Bear Memorial Park

Trails are everywhere in the Clairemont area, thanks to our proximity to a variety of canyons. If you want to find one off the beaten path, check out our blog post about the hidden entrance to the trail of Marian Bear Park.

The trail is serenity in the midst of suburbia and worth visiting. Pack a picnic or take a leisurely stroll through three miles of nature.

Did you know if it weren’t for the tireless efforts of Marian Bear in the 1970s, those trails would be another freeway?

Stairs

 Now Open!

Told you last week it was coming soon, but didn’t know this soon. L&L Hawaiian Barbecue just opened at Clairemont Town Square. Fun fact: the L’s stand for Lee and Lee, the last names of the founders. 4705 Clairemont Dr., Ste. C

 Coming Soon

Graze Craze, a national franchise of charcuterie catering, is coming to Linda Vista. Charcuterie options include traditional meat and cheese boards, as well as keto, vegetarian, and brunch boards. They will be located at 5401 Linda Vista Rd.

Potato Powder Love Noodle (say that three times fast) is moving into 99 Ranch Market’s food court, replacing Shann Xi Magic Kitchen. Potato Powder Love Noodle has a couple of locations in Los Angeles County. This will be the first in San Diego. I can’t tell you what’s on the menu because I don’t read Chinese, but pictures of the food look tasty. 5950 Balboa Ave.

PET OF THE WEEK

Meet Ace

After reading this disturbing exposé about the increasing dog euthanasia rates at San Diego County animal shelters, I wish I could make every single dog the pet of the week, but I can’t. Instead, I’ll post Ace.

Ace is a nearly 5-year-old pit bull mix with an absolutely adorable face. He loves walks, and is good with other dogs and kids. The kennel scares him, so hopefully someone rescues him soon. Ace is available for adoption at the San Diego Humane Society on Gaines Street.
