Sweet Tooth Satisfiers + Bunny Hop

Hey Neighbor!

Did you know today is National Rice Krispie Treat Day? Neither did I, but it happens to be serendipitous since I just wrote a new post on local dessert spots.

Besides sweet treats, this week’s news round-up covers a couple of new openings and closings, community matters, and some bunnylicious news.

Dive on in and let me know what you think!

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT

Something about stashing away your swimsuit and swapping out T-shirts for loose sweaters makes you feel just a little less guilty when you indulge in desserts that might not be good for the waistline, but are oh-so-delicious.

Our neighborhoods have some incredible dessert options that cater to the traditional and the more exotic. Taste rich chocolates that resemble works of art. Savor Thai tea crepe cakes that look like they are a million layers deep. Let Fruity Pebble-flavored rolled ice cream dessert melt on your tongue.

I know it’s early in the morning, but are you ready for dessert yet?

Check out the latest blog post that gives you 22 dessert options nearby, and let me know which one sounds the best. I know I’ve got some I’m checking out in the next couple of days.

LOCAL NEWS

Openings

Nick the Greek fast casual restaurant will likely replace Dickey’s Barbecue Pit on Balboa Avenue. They’ve submitted applications, but there is no further information.

Closings

Much to the chagrin of Clairemont High Schoolers, Del Taco’s long run at the corner of Balboa Ave. and Clairemont Drive is coming to an end. Closing date not yet posted. It’s rumored that additional housing will be built at the location, but this has not yet been confirmed.

SB 79

The California Senate passed SB 79 last week. This bill would override any local zoning laws and allow upzoning near transit hubs. Housing up to nine stories high would be allowed near transit corridors, which include bus, train, and trolley stations. The final hurdle for the bill’s passage is a sign-off by Governor Gavin Newsom between now and October. You can contact Governor Newsom in support of or in objection to the bill here.

Community News

The Clairemont Community Planning Group held a meeting on September 16 to further discuss the Clairemont Community Plan Update and the proposed changes it plans to submit to the city. Many residents expressed concern regarding how SB 79 could further impact Clairemont’s density.

The Serra Mesa Community Council and Planning Group will both hold meetings in the upcoming week. Information is listed below in events.

Housing

AMLI Aero Apartments has completed 97 apartments in the first phase of its five-phase project in Kearny Mesa. The 442-unit complex is slated for completion in the spring of 2026. Apartments range from studios to three-bedroom apartments. Monthly rent will range between $3,560 and $6,638. Six one-bedroom and three two-bedroom apartments have been set aside for low-income households.

Police Chase

If you live in Clairemont and heard police helicopters in the wee hours of September 16, you weren’t dreaming. A high-speed chase suspect was caught on Mt. Aguilar Drive. The suspect exceeded speeds of 100 mph.
