Hey Neighbor!
Last week’s poll to gauge interest in an in-person event/meet-up had a clear winner. More than 65% of you are interested. Noted.
I’ve got some ideas, but if you have some, too, don’t be shy—send them my way.
Before jumping into the newsletter, a reader wanted me to pass along the link to the revived “You Know You’re From Clairemont…” Facebook group. The long-time (and sole) administrator of the original page passed away last summer. Facebook was not sympathetic to his sister, who tried to access the group to hand over the reins to me. So I relaunched a new group that you can join here.

Clairemont Resident Opens Indya Restaurant
Local resident and restaurateur Gubi Khinda has a passion for Indian food and for Clairemont. That’s why it made perfect sense to open his new restaurant, Indya, in the heart of Clairemont in the former Boomerang’s space.
Indya offers traditional Indian fare, with a few modern twists, making the menu approachable for every palate (there’s even a cheeseburger for the less adventurous eaters).
Gubi wants to make Indya a favorite spot for locals, not only for food, but also for events and entertainment. Read the full story in this week’s local spotlight article.

Indian Fusion Restaurant in Clairemont Brings the Flavor

Let’s Make a Deal!
Who doesn’t like a good deal? Especially if it’s one that’s close to home and helps you support local, independent businesses.
That’s why I’m asking for your input in a three-question poll. My goal is to get you the best deals from the local businesses you love. Yep, I’ll do all the work so you don’t have to, but your input gives me leverage. I’d love it if you’d take the survey. Please and thank you.
Openings
🍜 Da Gu Rice Noodles recently opened on 4690 Convoy Street in Kearny Mesa. Da Gu serves Yunnan-style rice noodles and broth, with handmade topping choices. Select from spicy, tomato, pickled vegetables, or bone broth as your base, and build from there.
🥩 Mikiya Wagyu Shabu House, a national all-you-can-eat wagyu shabu (hotpot) chain, opened its first San Diego location at 4225 Convoy Street in Kearny Mesa this past December.
🩸Give Blood. Get Free Stuff (and maybe Super Bowl tickets).
Blood banks are in short supply after the holiday season, so they’re enticing donors with free stuff. San Diego Blood Bank is giving donors a long-sleeve, limited-edition T-shirt through January 25. And the Red Cross will automatically enter donors into a sweepstakes for a chance to win Super Bowl tickets.
Here’s where you can give nearby:
- Red Cross Kearny Mesa Blood Donation Center, 4229 Ponderosa Ave., Suite C; check RedCrossBlood.org for hours
- Jan. 11, 10 am– 4 pm, San Diego Harley-Davidson Morena, 4645 Morena Blvd.
🥳 Local Veteran Celebrates His104th Birthday
Yes, you read that right. Happy 104th birthday to Bay Ho resident and World War II veteran George Holbrook! Holbrook wanted to be a military pilot, but ultimately served as an aircraft mechanic. Daily stationary bike riding and reading (often without glasses) keep this centenarian spry.
👮🏽♀️Cached Out
San Diego Police Department’s Gang Unit nabbed some criminals in Linda Vista last week, confiscating multiple loaded weapons, ammunition, and illegal narcotics. It was a bad day for the criminals and a good day for the rest of the community.
🔋Dump and Shred
Have old electronics lying around? Or maybe a pile of papers that need shredding? Drop them at Clairemont High School, 4150 Ute Drive, on Saturday between 8 am and 3 pm. This recycling event is open to the community and is free.

Here’s this week’s roundup of the local market. Average days on market are creeping up, inching it closer to a buyer’s market. Check your zip code for more detailed results here.

Meet Smokey aka Smokey Bones aka Smokyus McPot
This precious guy has about five names listed on his profile, but whatever you prefer to call him, he’s adorable. Smokey is about 5 1/2 years old, leash trained, and ready to make your home his home. Grab him at the San Diego Humane Society (they are still running their program where you can bring a pet home for a trial and return it, no questions asked, if it’s not a good fit).
