Hey Neighbor!

Y’all are my people—you love to eat as much as I do. In last week’s poll, more than 65% of you said you eat out at least once per week. And you mentioned a ton of local favorites—Bay Park Fish Company, Sushi Fish Attack, Offshore Tavern, Roberto’s, Balboa’s Tap House, and many more. Love that!

Last weekend, in preparation for hosting Mother’s Day Brunch, I decided it was time to clean my oven window, which, on an older oven, is no simple feat. Well, one of the glass panels completely shattered. It got me thinking about all the repairs I’ve had to deal with over the past two years: a new dishwasher, a new roof, two slab-leak repairs, stucco, and a few others.

Anyone else have upcoming home repairs and feel my pain? Hit that button below and let me know what you’re dealing with (and if you have any great recommendations for service companies).

Let’s dig into this week’s news.

I sat down with the owner of Clairemont’s legendary dive bar, Peter D’s. If walls could talk, Peter D’s would have plenty to say. Instead, I got the story of this 48-year-old watering hole from Peter Luster, who was once California’s youngest liquor license holder. Boston has Cheers. Clairemont has Peter D’s.

Parks After Dark Kicks Off in June

Linda Vista Rec Center is one of the locations for San Diego Parks & Recreation’s Parks After Dark summer series. The series boasts family activities, including music, arts & crafts, sports clinics, and health & fitness events. The series runs from June 5 through August 1, from 5 pm to 8 pm.

Tack on Extra Time for a Detour

Several eagle-eyed readers spotted signage indicating that Mount Acadia Boulevard in Clairemont will be closed near Tecolote Golf Course from May 18 through June 8, from 8 am to 7 pm. This is part of the City of San Diego’s trunk sewer project. The city hasn’t officially posted any information about the closure on its website, so no further details are known.

A Deep Dive with Kearny Mesa’s Hopnonymous Brewery

CBS8 chatted with our very own backyard brewery, Hopnonymous, an award-winning brewery that just opened its second location in Normal Heights. Get to know them better by watching this in-depth interview with the owner and brewer.

Openings

🫖 You heard it here that Urban Matcha was coming. It opened this past week at 4698 Convoy Street, Suite 107. The Urban Matcha chain hails from Las Vegas, and this is its first opening in California.

🇬🇷 You also heard it here that Nick the Greek was opening in Clairemont. Stop by on May 19th from 11 am to 2:30 pm for the grand opening, where they’ll give away free food and have live Greek music.

🇻🇳 Phinology Coffee, which specializes in Vietnamese coffee and matcha, opened last month in the Convoy District at 4344 Convoy Street, Suite L.

Beyond the Neighborhood

🗑️ After the San Diego City Council voted against settling the trash fee lawsuit on Monday, the trial challenging San Diego’s trash collection fees has officially begun. The settlement would have reduced homeowners’ trash fees to $29 a month, as originally agreed by voters, but in actuality, rates were nearly 50% higher.

Pet of the Week large

This perfect pug mix is Chivo. He’s three years old, and understands both Spanish and English, so obvi he’s very smart. Chivo is a little shy at first, but give him a treat—any treat—and he’ll warm up really quickly. He loves taking walks, so why not walk him right into your life! He’s available at the San Diego Humane Society.
