🍀 San Diego’s Original Irish Pub + Unplugged Oil Wells

Hey Neighbor!

I hit up the 🍀Blarney Stone yesterday and drank a Guinness—research for this week’s article on our neighborhood Irish pubs, of course. It had been quite a while since I’d been in there and, as expected, absolutely nothing has changed. It’s a neighborhood institution, for sure. While it was quiet today, I’m sure it’s just the calm before the storm of next week’s festivities.

🍽️ Last week, I polled y’all to see if you’d be interested in Dinner Club, a social event that matches you with five other strangers for dinner at a local restaurant, with the restaurant announced the day of the event. It’s been taking the country by storm, but the poll was split, with just over half of you interested in participating. I’ll wait until we grow a little more and revisit it then.

St. Patrick’s Day is nipping at our heels. Fortunately, we don’t have to venture very far to celebrate since we have three Irish pubs within a short distance.

Did you know the Blarney Stone in Clairemont is considered San Diego’s original Irish pub? It’s been open nearly 50 years, and is a legendary neighborhood watering hole. Our other neighborhood claim to fame is O’Brien’s, named America’s Best Beer Bar by USA Today. And then there’s The Pub in Bay Park, a family-owned and operated Irish bar and restaurant with an expansive deck and a great view of Mission Bay.

Each of these establishments has a rich history that adds to our neighborhood charm. Read more about them in this week’s feature story.

Did you know that scattered throughout our very neighborhoods are idle oil wells that can potentially leak toxic chemicals and gases? While the onus is on oil and gas companies to plug these wells, they’ve barely made a dent in paying for these efforts. That means we citizens are not only at health risk, but potentially at risk of paying to seal these wells through our taxes.

These wells are located in Bay Park and Linda Vista, near schools and playgrounds.

High winds and dry air contributed to a brushfire in the Birdland neighborhood on Sunday afternoon. Several homes were evacuated as a precaution. The fire was extinguished within an hour of its beginning. No homes or people were harmed.

The planets must be aligned in a wild way that’s creating all kinds of traffic incidents. From exploding semis to car fires, a police chase through Clairemont and Linda Vista was the latest chaotic scene. On Monday, police pursued a stolen vehicle down Clairemont Mesa Boulevard. It crashed near Genesee, ejected the passenger, and the driver kept going. The driver crashed a second time near Mesa College, exiting the vehicle before it burst into flames.

Once just a dream, a trail connecting Serra Mesa’s Ruffin Canyon to Mission Valley is about to open. A subcommittee was formed in 2008 to work on this project, and after pushing through a lot of red tape, the city gave it the green light. Rain delays have pushed back the projected February opening, but expect the trail to be open very soon.
